Information on Impounded Vehicles
Vehicles impounded by the Division of Police are usually stored for pickup at Bluegrass Towing. They are located at 1001 Manchester St. and their phone number is 233-9711. Vehicles impounded for minor traffic infractions can usually be picked up directly from Bluegrass Towing.
However, if a vehicle is suspected of being involved in a crime, an investigative hold could be placed on it, barring its release. When the investigation is completed, a release form must be obtained from the Reports Desk in Central Records at Police Headquarters, 150 East Main St. Release forms are free of charge and can be obtained anytime. However, vehicles will only be released to the registered owner, unless a statement, notorized with the owner's authorization and signature, is provided. Proper documentation in the form of a driver's license and proof of registration is always necessary to obtain a release form. The form can then be taken to Bluegrass Towing, who will release the vehicle.
A computerized log of vehicles impounded from private property is also maintained by the Central Records unit, as a courtesy. You can call the private company directly or you can contact the Reports Desk at 258-3563, to determine the location of privately impounded vehicles.
