Resource Information for Victims and Witnesses

Division of Police - 258-3600

INVESTIGATOR CONTACT:

All reports received are reviewed for possible further investigation by a detective. Whether a report is assigned for active investigation depends on the information provided in the written report. Reports not assigned will be placed on a "pending" status, and will not be actively investigated until further information developes. If your report is assigned for a follow-up investigation, you will be notified, either in person, by phone, or by mail of the detective assigned and be provided a number to make contact with that detective. If you have not been contacted within two weeks, your report will be in "pending" status. Any additional information regarding your report may be called in to the Bureau of Investigation at 258-3700.

VICTIM ADVOCATES AND COMPENSATION INFORMATION

All cases involving violence or threats between family members or partners are assigned to domestic violence advocates for follow-up. Advocates attempt to contact the victims within 24 hours from the time the police are called. Advocates are available to assist victims in seeking information, linking to resources, and planning for safety. They are also able to update victims regarding case status and the court process, accompany victims to file protective orders, and attend court with victims.

A referral is not necessary for advocacy services – for more information, call 258-3690.

Note: Charges may be filed by the police and the alleged offender may be prosecuted, regardless of whether or not the victim wants to bring charges. The decision to charge and prosecute a case is not determined by the victim’s acceptance or refusal of advocacy services.
